Avoiding Wheel Alignment Issues in Calgary

Wheel or suspension alignment on most vehicles is designed to minimize wear and tear and maximize driver and passenger comfort. If you notice that your vehicle pulls significantly to the left or right when you are travelling on a straight, flat road with little cross-wind, or your tires are wearing abnormally, then your wheel alignment may require adjustment. Wheel alignment is all about checking the direction and angle at which the wheels are set against your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.

At Speedy Apollo, you’ll save repair costs and avoid a higher gas bill by keeping your tires, wheel alignment, and wheel bearings working properly. If you do experience a problem, we provide wheel alignment repairs to Calgary residents.

It is important to have correct wheel alignment because it will save you money. Over time, your tires will last longer, and your vehicle handling will be optimized for safety.

Always have your vehicle’s alignment checked when:

  • Your vehicle has hit something (e.g. a curb or major road hazard).
  • You notice that your tires are wearing abnormally or unevenly.
  • You experience steering or handling problems, such as:
    • Your vehicle pulls or drifts to one side.
    • Your steering wheel does not return easily after a turn.
    • Your steering wheel remains at an angle when driving in a straight line.
  • When you replace suspension or steering components or you buy a new set of tires and want them to last as long as possible.

The three main adjustments which may be made concerning alignment are camber, caster, and toe. The camber is the angle of lean of the wheel away from the vertical when viewed from the front of the vehicle. If there is too much difference between the camber angles of the front wheels, the vehicle will tend to pull to one side.

The caster is a bit harder to conceptualize, but is defined as the angle created by the steering’s pivot point from the front to back of the vehicle. Typically, positive caster will help the vehicle stay stable at high speeds, and will increase tire lean when cornering.

The toe identifies the direction in which the tires are pointing relative to the centre line of the vehicle. Toe settings affect the handling characteristics of the vehicle and its straight line stability.
